Sgt. Steven King, Marine Corps Community Services

By Sgt. Steven King, Marine Corps Community Services

Who knows the meaning of the word “sacrifice” better than a military family? Non-military families can enjoy each other’s company thanks to the price military families pay. The price isn’t cheap. Service members experience deployments that last for months at a time, training exercises which can last for weeks, continuous concern for the safety of their loved one and constant moving from place to place as duty stations change … not a cheap price at all. Although efficient tools and weaponry are essential in winning wars, the love and support of families to their uniformed members goes a long way in ensuring mission readiness.

Every November, for the past 12 years, the Armed Services have celebrated Military Family Month with activities and events to recognize the families of our heroes. Gen. James T. Conway, commandant of the Marine Corps, encourages commands to celebrate this occasion by planning special events and activities throughout the month.

Marine Corps Community Services joins the nation in recognizing the families of our heroes by hosting a number of activities, special discounts and exhibits for military families including a Deployed Spouses Ball.

The sacrifice military families make for our nation can never be re-paid through events. However, throughout this month MCCS is joining military installations everywhere in at least making an effort to say what most people who make sacrifices don’t often hear … thank you.
