Retired U.S. Marine Corps Master Gunnery Sgt. Devina Beatty spent nearly 30 years in the Corps. In that time, she was the first female master gunnery sergeant in the MOS of aviation ordnance while serving out of the Pentagon in Washington D.C. She also spent time as an education officer. For her, the mission has always been clear and present.

“Being a Marine we were always trying to keep up with technology and support the warfighter in terms of weapon capability,” Beatty said. “I realized while I was (at the Pentagon) that, while we had the passion and the commitment to do well, we didn’t quite have the expertise or credentials to compete with the contractors or work with our partners… That’s part of why I went to Webster and pursued my master’s degree.”

Having earned a master’s from Webster while on active duty, Dr. Beatty now serves as the Director for Webster University, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River. Her education journey was not an easy one.

“I had a lot of resistance when I came through,” Beatty said of the stigma surrounding pursuing higher education while on active duty. “It wasn’t the thing to do. Even after having done my PMA people said ‘you’re a Marine first’ or ‘that’s off duty education.’ You can do it. I got my phD. I did everything but the dissertation on active duty.”

Beatty’s dissertation focused on veteran turnover decisions and why they left the Corps, something that always resonated with her both during her service and now where she seeks to promote higher learning for service members.

“We’re here at Webster University to support the warfighter,” Beatty said. “I want to continue to build on that message. I want them (service members) to know we’re not just another college on college row. We’re here to give back. I hope I have the opportunity to do that.”

Webster University, MCB Camp Lejeune is located at 825 Stone Street, Room 115, Camp Lejeune, NC 28547.
