Any service member or retiree needing to make changes to their TRICARE plan for 2019 will have a chance during TRICARE Open Season.

Open season is an annual period when beneficiaries can enroll in or change their healthcare coverage plan for the next year. TRICARE beneficiaries will experience Open Season for the first time Nov. 12 to Dec 10. Following this year’s inaugural Open Season, the TRICARE Open Season will happen each year from the Monday of the second full week in November and run until the Monday of the second full week in December. Enrollment choices made during this period take effect on Jan. 1.

This Open Season period is especially important for retirees currently enrolled in the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program (TRDP). TRDP and its coverage will no longer exist after Dec. 31, 2018. Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP) will replace TRDP.

Retirees must take the steps online at www.benefeds.com to enroll in one of 10 dental programs to have coverage in 2019.

FEDVIP is able to assist retirees without access to computers or the internet by calling 1-877-3337, opt. 2.

A full list of each of the available plans can be found at www.tricare.benefeds.com.

In addition to new dental coverage for retirees through FEDVIP, four vision plans are also available. Enrollment in one of these plans must also be completed during the Open Season period.

The TRDP to FEDVIP transition does not affect active-duty service members and their families’ dental coverage. However, for the first time, active-duty family members currently enrolled in a TRICARE health care plan are eligible for FEDVIP vision coverage. Active-duty service members will continue with their same vision care that is already part of their TRICARE coverage.

During TRICARE Open Season, beneficiaries may also enroll in or change their TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select plan. Any changes will take effect on Jan. 1.

If the beneficiary remains eligible and makes no changes during TRICARE Open Season, their coverage will remain the same for 2019. Beneficiaries may also change their type of enrollment. For example, a beneficiary may switch from individual to family enrollment.

Outside of the TRICARE Open Season period, eligible individuals may still enroll in or change enrollment within 90 days after they or a family member experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE), which is outlined on the TRICARE website.

Whether during TRICARE Open Season or following a QLE, beneficiaries have three ways to make an enrollment choice:

• Online: Go to the Beneficiary Web Enrollment website

• By phone: Call the regional contractor

• By mail: Mail enrollment form to regional contractor

TRICARE Open Season doesn’t apply to the premium-based plans listed below. These plans offer continuous open enrollment throughout the year:

• TRICARE Retired Reserve

• TRICARE Reserve Select

• TRICARE Young Adult

• Continued Health Care Benefit Program

Also, TRICARE Open Season doesn’t apply to TRICARE for Life beneficiaries. TRICARE for Life doesn’t require enrollment.
