Arriving to a new duty station is not only a change of scenery for service members and their families, it also represents a challenge with every move.

In an effort to help ease the stress of transitioning from one school to another and showcase their new location, the Lejeune-New River Marine Corps School Liaison Program hosted an open house aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Nov. 30.

“The purpose of the open house is to let people know where we are located,” said Donna Grady, Camp Lejeune-New River School Liaison. “We are a program that is usually behind the scenes and we do not get a lot of walk-in traffic, but now that we are in a visual place close to the school. We want people to know we are here and the resources we can give to them.”

The assets of the liaisons range from placement in new schools as a result of a permanent change of station to preparing a student for their guardian’s future deployments.

“The first thing we do is course transfers with permanent change of station moves. We can do all the leg work behind the scenes so the family can focus on moving,” said Grady. “Number two is advice for academic issues, nobody’s school life is perfect and when something comes up and a parent in stuck or lost, they can contact us and we know a lot of recourses and can help to point them in the right direction. The third thing is we assist military families in all of the needs for tutoring and deployment support.”

One of the myths regarding the school liaisons is they only help students attending schools aboard installations.

“We work for any military kid connected to New River or Camp Lejeune home school, private school, Department of Defense school and public schools,” said Grady.

The liaisons are extremely eager to help in any way possible.

“We are here to help make sure children end up in a good school situation, that fits the needs of the family,” said Julie Fulton, Camp Lejeune-New River School Liaison.
