There is a new champion of the Commanders’ Cup Series intramural basketball league on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The Headquarters and Support (H&S) Battalion basketball squad defeated the defending champions, 2nd Supply Battalion, 64-61 at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, March 6.

Taequan Callahan and Trey Ryan each scored 13 points to lead H&S. Dejuan Isaiah and Rodrick Rumble each had 12 points for a balanced H&S squad.

“It felt really good winning tonight, and a lot of us have been here since our first year on Lejeune,” Callahan said. “It has been four years coming up short, and this fourth year we finally made it, winning the championship.”

Trickey Finch, H&S head coach, said his team’s improvement throughout the season made him proud.

“It means a lot for our team to take the championship victory,” Finch said. “We started out the season with tryouts, and we narrowed it down to 12 players. I am impressed with the effort tonight, and I am proud of the guys.”

Callahan’s performance earned him a tip of the cap from his head coach.

“Callahan isn’t usually a scorer for the team,” Finch said. “However, he came up big for us. I appreciate his hard work and effort.”

Jurmond Cattenhead led the 2nd Supply with 32 points.

Christina Guralny, 2nd Supply head coach, remained positive despite the loss.

“The team played a really hard game tonight,” Guralny said. “Even if we missed shots, these guys never stopped playing as a team.”

The game was tight throughout. H&S led 37-36 at halftime. H&S took a 64-61 lead with 8 seconds left, and a final shot to tie the game from 2nd Supply missed the mark, clinching the title for H&S.

H&S Bn. will play HMH-464 Condors, the New River Champions, in a Champs-vs. Champs game on March 13 at 6:30 p.m. located at New River Fitness Center, AS-4400, on Marine Corps Air Station New River.
