Packard drops 25 points in 69-68 victory

John Packard hit the game-winning basket and scored 25 points to lead Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (HMH-464) to a 69-68 victory over the School of Infantry (SOI) in the 2019 Commanders’ Cup Series New River intramural basketball championship at the New River Fitness Center on Marine Corps Air Station New River, March 7.

“I am very happy for Packard,” said Alonzo Jackson, who shared coaching duties with Packard for the Condors. “He is very talented and fast. I am very happy for him and he is a great guy.”

SOI led 33-25 at halftime and extended its lead to as much as 14 points.

“The game felt like a true feeling between victory and defeat,” said Jackson, who scored 21 points in the game. “We were down 14 with the last two minutes on the clock, and it felt like boot camp. We had to dig deep and we were all tired. We played the entire game, and it showed the heart of the Condors showing how much more we wanted it compared to the other team.”

With about 30 seconds left on the clock, Packard hit a shot to put HMH-464 ahead 69-68. SOI missed two free throws and then missed a last-second shot as HMH-464 squeezed out the victory.
