Georgia Lee scores four goals in first home game

Lejeune High School girls soccer player Georgia Lee played in her first soccer game as a Devil Pup. She walked away with four goals when time expired.

The LHS Devil Pups (1-0) defeated Southside High School  Seahawks 5-1 at the Lejeune High School practice soccer field on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune on Wednesday evening in the season home opener.

“The biggest difference in today’s game is that the team is understanding what I expect,” said Charles Teegarden., LHS soccer head coach. “Once they believe in what they are doing, it works. Right now, we have a formation that they believe in. We also have position players that are playing in positions that they understand.”

Junior Jenna Negron started off the scoring two minutes into the game sliding the ball past the Southside goal keeper on the nearside of the box. The crowd roared as the first goal of the season found the back of the net.

With ten minutes left in the first half, Lejeune’s George Lee ripped a shot from five feet outside the Southside box getting finding the back of the net.

It was only two minutes later that Lee struck again tapping the soccer ball into the goal giving her team a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.

“It has been a great start to the season,” said Lee. “It feels really good [scoring four goals in the season opener]. I am really excited for the reason of the season with the team.”

Lee would score two more goals in the second half including one off of a penalty kick with 17:11 left on the clock in the second half making it 5-0 Lejeune.

“It has been a great start to the season,” said Lee. “It feels really good [scoring four goals in the season opener]. I am really excited for the reason of the season with the team.”

Southside’s Sindy Chavez slipped past a Lejeune defender and put her team on the scoreboard with seven minutes left in the second half making it 5-1.

“We talked about squeezing the middle down because of her (George Lee),” said Jay Petty, Southside girls soccer head coach. “She was having too much down the middle of the field. We made sure that all defensive backs were squeezing down the middle.”

Teegarden was proud of Lee and what she accomplished in the first game of the season.

“Georgia Lee has been a surprise,” said Teegarden. “I didn’t realize she played soccer but I am glad that she does.”

The Devil Pups return to action on Friday at North Duplin High School starting at 4pm.
