Biggest prize eludes Marines as they lose to Army in title match

Some shiny medals were part of the items that returned with the All-Marine Wrestling Team from their trip to Fort Bliss, Texas.

The Marines competed in the 2019 Armed Forces Championship and took silver as the U.S. Army squad secured its 18th consecutive freestyle title with a 33-9 victory.

In freestyle against Army, Marine 2nd Lt. Jamel Johnson defeated Pvt. Hayden Tuma by technical fall, 11-0 at 65 kilograms to win gold. Marine 1st Lt. Peyton Walsh also won gold, beating Army Sgt. Vladyslav Dombrovskiy 9-8.

In the Greco-Roman competition, 11 Marines placed in the top two spots. As a team, the Marines defeated Navy 39-1 and snagged a 41-0 victory over Air Force.  Against Army, the Marines fell 32-10.

After four consecutive Greco-Roman titles for Army’s 2nd Lt. Michael Hooker,

Marine Sgt. Raymond Bunker ended 2nd Lt. Michael Hooker’s four-year winning streak in the 72-kilogram weight class.

U.S. Marines Sgt. John Stefanowicz (82 kg) and Capt. Daniel Miller (97 kg) both took gold over Army’s Maj. Jon Anderson and Sgt. Lucas Sheridan, respectively.

The All-Marine Wresting Team is scheduled to host a folkstyle tournament at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 16. Registration and admission are free. For more information, visit

Silver — Sgt. Jemone Carter 55 kg,  Lance Cpl. German Diaz 60 kg, Sgt. Xavier Johnson 63 kg, 2nd Lt. Jamel Johnson 67 kg, 1st Lt. Peyton Walsh 77 kg, Sgt. Vaughn Monreal Berner 87 kg, Sgt. Trent Osnes 130 kg.


Gold —2nd Lt. Jamel Johnson 65 kg, 1st Lt. Peyton Walsh 79 kg.

Silver —Sgt. Christian Martin 57 kg, 1st Lt. Colton Rasche 61 kg, Sgt. Raymond Bunker 70 kg, Sgt. John Stefanowicz 86 kg, 2nd Lt. Terrence Zaleski 92 kg, Capt. Daniel Miller 97 kg.

Bronze — Lance Cpl. Marciano Ali 74 kg, Sgt. Trent Osnes 125 kg.
