Commanders’ Cup basketball playoffs to start Monday

The 2nd Supply Battalion basketball team completed an undefeated regular season and now eyes the 2019 Commanders’ Cup Series playoffs.

Second Supply Battalion (7-0) took a 58-40 victory over 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion (4-3) at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

“It felt good to take the victory tonight, and we tried to execute the same game plan,” said Shawn Lee, 2nd Supply Battalion assistant coach. “We believe in playing defense first and the offense will come. Playing aggressive is one of our strong points. We just need to work on communication, talking more on defense.”

Lee’s teammate, shooting guard Lamonte Lewis, is new to the Commanders’ Cup Series in 2019.

“My friend [Benson Cabiaza] couldn’t be here today, so I told him I would perform for him,” said Lewis. “I am not sure how it feels to win because it is my first year on the team. I joined the team because I am an athlete. I really just love to have fun. Through the Commanders’ Cup, we get to meet not only Marines but also Sailors.”

Jonathan Linares, 2nd Law Enforcement head coach, said his team needs to focus on the fundamentals.

“With playoffs right around the corner, we need to work on our defense,” said Linares. “Defensively, we missed a lot of assignments. The more talking on defense will help us out.”

Second Law Enforcement Battalion enters the playoffs as defending division champions.

“The Commanders’ Cup Series helps us help the unit,” said Linares. “We won the Commanders’ Cup Series last year in our division.”

The Commanders’ Cup Series playoffs are scheduled to start Monday evening at the Goettge Memorial Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
