Nothing helps build the community more than a Family Fun Run at the Tarawa Terrace Community Center on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

For many, fitness is a major component of life, but for a service member, fitness is a responsibility. Service members and their families see multiple benefits from participation in these Family Fun Runs.

Each Family Fun Run has a theme that corresponds with the month in which the run occurs. For example, the theme of the May run was “Star Wars,” to go along with May 4, which is known as May the Fourth Be With You Day. Characters from “Star Wars,” were at the race including Kylo Ren, a storm trooper and other members from the Dark Side. The “Star Wars” theme of the run attracted both children and adults, just an example that the themes of the Family Fun Runs provides the Lejeune community entertainment and creates memories that will last a lifetime for runners.

But beyond the fun, these monthly runs are great for physical training. For runners who desire a challenge, they can complete the three-mile run while keeping a solid pace. There is also a one-mile option for those looking to just enjoy their time out with friends and family.

I have had the opportunity to cover some of these runs, and it’s great to see the Marines and Sailors who volunteer. During the Pot of Gold run last March, there were some active-duty service members who dressed in their St. Patrick’s Day attire. Some were at the start of the race, while others were scattered throughout the course.

The runs that take place each month on base are great for bringing the MCB Lejeune community together. Military families spend time running and socializing together on a Marine base. Children of service members get to see one another and get to exercise. Marinating camaraderie is important on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and these Tarawa Terrace family fun runs continue this mission.

Gunnery Sgt. David Frank participated in the Family Fun Red, White and Blue Run back in July.

“I am coming out here today to run with the family,” said Frank. “We live off base, so this is a great way to spend time together as a family. This is a great opportunity to celebrate America’s birthday. Community building is a huge concept in the United States Marine Corps.”

The next Family Fun Run — called “Elf on the Run” — is slated for 8 a.m. Saturday at the Tarawa Terrace Community Center on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Sign up and participate. You’ll never enjoy running so much.
