All-Marine wrestlers Sgt. Raymond Bunker (left) and Staff Sgt. John Stefanowicz (right) have been named the 2019 Semper Fit All-Marine Athletes of the Year. Both Marines competed at this year’s World Wrestling Championships in September. Most recently, Stefanowicz won gold and Bunker won bronze at the Haparanda Cup in Sweden, Nov. 30. They will be recognized at the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ Combined Awards Program ceremony on Marine Corps Base Quantico, Jan. 22.
“It’s a pretty big honor,” Stefanowicz said. “This marks my third year applying for the award, and each year I knew I had a better chance. Looking back, it feels a lot better knowing the two they chose came from our team. It shows how far the team has come.”
Jason Loukides, All-Marine Wrestling Team Head Coach, sees Bunker as a confident wrestler. Loukides also acknowledged Stefanowicz’s grit as a trademark to the staff sergeant’s wrestling.
