The Lejeune High School football team took a 48-14 loss against Spring Creek High School tonight at the Lejeune High School Athletic Stadium on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. After losing senior standout Matthew Peterman to an injury with three minutes left in the first quarter, the Devil Pups pushed back against their opponents knowing their star wide receiver wasn’t coming back for the rest of the game.
“I think we played hard tonight which was the best that we have played all season,” said Jim Gardiner, Devil Pups head coach. “We just need to work on playing better defense next game containing the outside run.”
In the first quarter, Desmond Johnson jumped into the air catching the ball from junior quarterback Darnell Collins with four minutes left in the opening quarter of play. For the Gators, senior Dominique Morse couldn’t be stopped in the first of play rushing past the Lejeune defenders. Spring Creek High School took a 34-6 lead going into halftime.
“I love the atmosphere playing here (on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune),” said Daniel Robinson, Spring Creek football head coach. “My father was in the Air Force and I grew up as a military child. The kids here do a wonderful job and are great student-athletes.”
The Devil Pups made an attempt at a comeback in the last quarter of play. Quarterback Darnell Collins ran into the end zone with 1:28 on the clock. Johnson after that jumped over the defender again to secure the 2-pt conversion.
The Devil Pups return to Devilpup Field on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. against Lakewood High School.
