Cpl. John Hyland, Firepower Control Team Chief, 2d Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, was named the Jacksonville-Onslow Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee’s (MAC) Service Member of the month for May. The recognition goes to Marines and sailors who are nominated by their command for going above and beyond as well as expressing a commitment to their service. The MAC reviews these applicants and selects a service member they feel best meets their criteria.
Hyland was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He would go on to graduate from Emmaus High school in Emmaus, Pennsylvania and attend Kutztown University before arriving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island for training May 9, 2016. Hyland graduated recruit training with 3rd Battalion, Mike Company, Platoon 3061 August 5 as a private.
As a private, Hyland attended Marine Combat Training (MCT) at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. Following the completion of MCT, Hyland reported to the Marine Artillery Scout Observer Course in Fort Sill, Oklahoma where he earned the rank private first class. After graduating Fire Support Marine School in Coronado, California Hyland reported to 2nd Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company (ANGLICO) on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and was assigned to 2d Brigade in December of 2016.
Hyland participated in Burmese Chase May 2017, attended Joint Automated Deep Operations Coordination System Operator Course June 2017, and graduated the ANGLICO Basic Course in July 2017. Hyland was promoted to Lance Corporal July 2017.
As a lance corporal, Hyland deployed to Syria in support of Operation Inherent Resolve as a forward observer on a firepower control team with 1st Battalion 10th Marines September 2017. Hyland reported back to 2nd Brigade, 2nd ANGLICO January 2018. Lance Cpl. Hyland graduated Joint Fire’s Observer Course in Little Creek, Virginia March 2018. Hyland also graduated the Cold Weather Warfare Instructor Course in Elverum, Norway April 2018 at the Norwegian School of Winter Warfare.
Hyland was promoted meritoriously to Corporal on May 2nd 2018. Cpl. Hyland participated in Burmese Chase May 2018 on MCB Camp Lejeune and participated in Green Cannon July 2018 in Salisbury, England as a Firepower Control Team Chief for Firepower Control Team 7.
Cpl. Hyland participated in Trident Juncture in multiple areas of operations in Norway in 2018. Hyland also graduated the Royal Netherlands Marine’s Arctic Movement and Survival Course in Åsegarden, Norway in 2019. Cpl. Hyland is currently continuing his military and professional education and remains at 2nd ANGLICO as a Chief for FCT 7.
Cpl. Hyland’s awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Inherent Resolve Campaign Medal (w/ one bronze star), Navy Arctic Service Ribbon, and a Certificate of Commendation.
