Boys’ basketball extends winning streak to four games

Basketball

The Lejeune High School boys’ basketball team won their fourth-straight game 77-63 over Heide Trask, Jan. 10.

Andrew Navarro led LHS with 30 points. Jaylon Armstrong finished with 22 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

The Devil Pups are 3-3 in the Coastal 8 Conference (1A/2A) and 7-6 overall heading into Friday’s home game against East Carteret.

The LHS girls fell on the road against Trask.

Wrestling

Lejeune’s Kieran Lavato won against Pender’s James Flint in a conference tri-meet, Jan. 8. Garrett Vega earned his first pin of the season 30 seconds into his match versus Dixon’s Matthew Nichols.

LHS hosts Southwest Onslow and North Lenoir on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m.

Track

The LHS boys won their meet at Heide Trask, Jan. 8.

Kyle Baldwin placed first in both the triple jump and pole vault to go along with second in the high jump and third in the 55-meter hurdles. Karl Benson won the 1000-meter run and Kamrin Wisherd finished third in the 500-meter.

LHS took second through seventh in the mile run. Tyler Shelton, second, and Niklas Cooper, third, led the way.

The LHS girls finished second overall. Kilala Stone won the 55-meter dash in 9.44 seconds, and Emalee Reynolds cleared 7 feet for first in pole vault. Elizabeth Schwend got second in the 1000-meter run, Skyler Kuncik placed third in the mile and Anne Perdue finished third in shot put.

The 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relay teams for both the boys and the girls teams also won.

Swimming

Dean Fecteau placed second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard backstroke against four other schools at Twin Rivers YMCA in New Bern, Jan. 8.

Luc Fecteau got a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly, and Devin Fay had a couple top-10s in the 100-yard and 50-yard freestyles. Micah Velarde placed 7th in the 200-yard individual medley.

The LHS girls finished fourth out of six teams. Caroline Morgan took second in the 100-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Hannah Velarde got third in 100-yard butterfly and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. Lucy Pound finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle.
