Devil Pups Winter Track and Field

 Kyle Baldwin has two top-10 finishes in 1A/2A championships

The Lejeune High School boys winter track team placed 50th out of 105 schools at the 1A/2A state indoor track and field championships in Winston-Salem, Feb. 9.

Croatan High School in Newport won the state championship with 80 points.

Kyle Baldwin had the highest finish of any LHS competitor, finishing in sixth place in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, 6 inches, a foot higher than his season-opening performance. Baldwin also placed 10th in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.68 seconds.

Also individually for the Devil Pups, Xavier Rice finished 13th in the state in the 300-meter dash in a time of 38.7 seconds.

The 4-by-400 relay team of Karl Benson, Kamrin Wisherd, Dylan Presson and Rice finished 10th in the state in a time of 3:48.14.

The 4-by-800 relay team of Tyler Shelton, Nicholas Presley, Wisherd and Benson placed 13th in the state with a time of 9:04.95.

This season marked Lejeune High’s second time competing in winter track and the first time the school qualified athletes for the state meet.

Lejeune High track athletes have about a month off before the spring season begins with a home meet against Dixon, Croatan and East Carteret at 4 p.m. March 14 on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
