Tristian Garivay may have scored just six points as Headquarters and Support Battalion (H&S) played Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (HMH-464) in the Champ vs. Champ Intramural Game at Marine Corps Air Station New River, March 13.
But, it was Garivay’s defense that proved crucial as his steal with one second left secured a 59-58 victory for H&S.
“I knew they were going to inbound the ball to No. five [Jonah Packard] and I took a gamble to be honest, which paid off,” Garivary said. “This season has been really successful, and it is my last season with the team. ... Winning it all is a cherry on top.”
The game pitted the intramural league champions from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River.
“It feels good to take the win against the New River team,” said Dejuan Isaiah, a member of the H&S team. “Winning the championship on Camp Lejeune and playing the winners of the New River team made for a great game. I am glad that we came out on top.”
Roderick Rumble scored 24 points to lead H&S to the victory. Isaiah added 10 points, as did Taequan Callahan.
“It feels good playing against the New River basketball champions,” said H&S head coach Trickey Finch. “We came up short the last four years, and this year we came in and did a great job of playing together. It feels good to represent Camp Lejeune basketball.”
Jonah Packard had a team-high 22 points for HMH-464. Alonzo Jackson added 18 points and Brock Barbeau added 11, including three 3-pointers.
“To be the champions of the New River feels really good,” said Packard, who serves as co-coach. “We get up well on people defensively. We don’t care who gets the credit at the end of the day. We just want to win.”
