Six student-athletes from Lejeune High School were given All Coastal 8 1A/2A Conference (C8C) honors this month. Boys’ golf was the only team to have more than one team member selected to the all-conference list. Sophomore, Austin Barkhimer, who qualified for the 1A state championship, and freshman, Robbie Morgan were awarded the honor.
“Both players are really good students [and] are both multi-sport athletes,” said boys’ head golf coach Michael Phillips, who will be losing Barkhimer in the offseason due to PCS. Morgan will return for the 2020 season before PCSing, too. “Robbie will be a big part of next year’s team,” Phillips said.
Senior, Jacob Still, who was the LHS baseball team’s captain this spring, was given the all-conference nod after driving in eight runs and hitting four doubles and a triple.
“Jacob was a total team player and did everything and anything the coaches asked him to do,” said head baseball coach Edison Vega. “He is well deserving of his all-conference player selection because of the commitment he put in to these past four seasons.”
Southwest Onslow’s Josiah Zamora was the C8C Player of the Year in baseball as head coach Roy Jarman got coach of the year. The LHS baseball team went 1-17 this spring.
Sophomore catcher, Skyler Bovee was the LHS softball team’s only player to get selected as all-conference following a winless campaign which included five losses by forfeit due to injuries. Southwest Onslow’s Mykenzie White was the C8C’s Player of the Year.
Junior, Georgia Lee, was selected to the all-conference list after scoring 24 goals in 19 games this season. Lee, who is in her first year at LHS, said that she was just faster than most of the defenders she faced this season and that her speed was the key to scoring so many goals. The girls’ team at LHS won five games this year.
Pole vaulting standout Kyle Baldwin was the track & field teams’ only selection to the all-conference list. Baldwin was the C8C’s gold medalist in the pole vault. He also grabbed silver at the conference meet in the 110-meter hurdles. Baldwin, a junior whose father is a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps, took gold in the pole vault at the East Regional to help his team win their fifth-straight regional title. He went on to earn silver at the state championship by clearing 12 feet, six inches. Southwest Onslow’s Tahalia Fairman was named the girls’ track athlete of the year.
